Wedding Dress Preservation

Wedding Dresses….a little girl’s dream to dress up like a princess one day in a beautiful gown and marry her prince.

After trying on what felt like hundreds of dresses (ok, it was just six or so), I finally found “the one”.

Circa 2006 :)

Yesterday, seven years after my wedding, I finally mailed my wedding dress off for preservation.

This monster took up a lot of room in my guest bedroom closet! When I spring cleaned my home this Spring, I decided it was finally time. After my long run on Saturday, I decided to tackle the beast!

Here’s the kicker – I already had the pre-paid kit for mailing, cleaning, and everything! What took me so long?!

Prior to shipping, I contacted the 1-800 number on the box to make sure everything was still ok – I didn’t want my dressing getting lost in oblivion because of the age of the box.

Me: “Hi! I purchased a preservation kit……uh….seven years ago….….yeah…..is it still ok to mail?”

I’m sure she thought I was crazy!

Included in the box were a list of instructions, a bag, prepaid FedEx and UPS labels (for mailing of your choice), and an order form.

The company also supplied “stain” stickers for the dress – they fully clean and steam the dress prior to mailing it back. They’ll even fix any rips or tears for an additional fee (thankfully, I didn’t need any extra fixing)!

There were more stains on the dress than I originally thought!

Everything was placed inside the bag, then inside the box provided.

Taped up and ready to mail! I officially shipped my dress off yesterday and the box stated that they return the dress within 3-4 weeks, so we’ll see what happens!

What about you? If you have a wedding dress, did you have it preserved or is it still hanging in a closet? Trash the dress photo session? Have a baby quilt made out of it? I would love to know!

  1. This is awful but I don't even know where my wedding dress is! I think it might be in a spare closet in my parent's house. I haven't looked at it since the day of my wedding (almost 10 years ago)! I do think it would be fun to do a Trash the Dress session with My sister once she gets married. The quilt idea sounds nice too. Can't wait to see how your dress turns out! It's a lovely dress and you look beautiful in it!

  2. I've got that oh so familiar white David's Bridal garment bag hanging in my closet. Been there for about 4 years now. I've wanted to do a trash the dress session, minus the mud or paint, but never got around to it. At this point, I'm not sure if I should preserve it or what. :)

  3. Haha! I feel so much better that it took me a month last year to send mine in to Davids Bridal. I didnt pre-purchase but I bought the package soon after the wedding. I was so worried because we had an outdoor reception in June last year with rain, humidity and SO many grass stains ;-) You looked gorgeous in your dress!

    1. Yes, don't feel bad - 1 month isn't bad at all!! Thanks so much, Ashley! :0)

  4. I had my dress hanging in my David's bridal garment bag in our guest closet at the old apartment, but now that we have a 1-bedroom apartment we put it in one of those vacuum bags that suck all the air out and save space LOL! I'll probably be like you and 7 years later still have it laying around somewhere!

  5. I've never been married, but I doubt I'd go crazy on a dress and wedding. I'm not one for being the center of attention. I'd probably get married in Vegas or City Hall. If I did have a dress, I'd probably have given it away soon after the wedding. I rarely hang on to stuff like that. Pictures are enough. I'm interested in how they preserve it. What do they do?

    1. Understandable. :0)
I'm not sure what all they do with the dress...I do know that it gets shipped back to me in a display box.

  6. My wedding dress circa 1975 is sitting in a box at the top of my closet. I'm curious now what it looks like and may take it out!

  7. I had mine preserved then after 10 years I got tired of moving it and I gave it away so some girl who could not afford a dress could get to dress like a princess for a day.

  8. I had my wedding dress at my parents hanging in my closet for about a year then on Christmas Day my parents brought out a VERY LARGE gold box with a red bow. My dad took my dress to a wedding preservation company near the house and had it preserved for me. He was so sweet, he did it all by himself. I can't see myself doing trash the dress shoot. Lol I don't know why since I will never wear it again.

  10. My mother was kind enough to buy the preservation from David's Bridal for me. We just hit our 2 year anniversary and I have been trying to figure out how the preservation worked. It turns out she just took something off the box and rang it up, never gave us the box. So now I am left with the daunting task of figuring out how to have my dress preserved without having to pay again for it..... I would love to get it out of the way and I couldn't imagine parting with it at this point in time. Wish me luck, ladies.
