Keurig 2.0 Review

Disclaimer: I received the Keurig 2.0 for testing/review for free from Influenster. No further compensation was received for this review. All opinions stated are my own.

How many Keurig lovers do we have out there? I did a little research and discovered an interesting fact – back in 2011, one in four coffee makers sold in the US at Christmastime was a Keurig. Can you imagine how those numbers have changed today, a mere three years later? Source

Recently, I was given the opportunity to review the Keurig 2.0 K550 model through Influenster and I couldn’t have been more excited!

I read up on the Keurig 2.0 before receiving the shipment and I found that a few changes had been made from prior models– some of the changes work for my personal preferences and others do not work for me. Keep reading and you’ll see what I mean…

Keurig 2

One new perk of the Keurig 2.0 that I LOVE – this brewer brews a POT of coffee!!
Prior to this Keurig model, I kept my old school coffee maker tucked away in the cabinets for company so I’m really happy for this change!

Keurig 2 (3)

Included in the shipment were two sample boxes of cups – six K-Cups and four K-Carafe packs.  Also included was an additional box of eight K-Carafe French Roast packs. You can see the size comparison of the K-Cup/K-Carafe in the photo above.

For reference, the K-Carafe is on the left and brews a pot of coffee up to four/five cups (30 oz) and the K-Cup is on the right and brews a single cup of coffee.

Keurig 2 (4)

An additional difference between this brewer and other Keurig brewers is the functionality of the system. No longer can you brew your own coffee grounds (whomp whomp) OR your “old” K-Cups that don’t have the specialized logo on the lid.

Keurig 2 (13)

For example, we have a box and a half of “old” (aka “unlicensed”) Starbucks Sumatra K-Cups. How can I tell the difference? Well, there’s a white ring around the lid of the Breakfast Blend/Pike Place Roast that says “Keurig Brewed” – notice the Sumatra cup doesn’t have this ring. Included in every Keurig 2.0 is a scanning system which reads each K-Cup that’s placed into the machine.

Unfortunately, the “old” K-Cups do not include the correct system and the Keurig 2.0 will not read them as a usable K-Cup.

Keurig 2 (9)

See what I mean? No coffee for you!

(P.S. - Don’t worry, those Starbucks K-Cups won’t go to waste!)

OK I’m getting ahead of myself here – moral of the story…make sure that each K-Cup package you purchase has the “Keurig Brewed” logo on the box.

Keurig 2 (5)

I’ve yet to see a box of K-Cups that doesn’t have the Keurig Brewed logo on it…“old” and “new” system alike (even the “old/unlicensed” box of Starbucks Sumatra K-Cups  has the Keurig Brewed logo on the box). If you’ve seen a box that doesn’t include this logo, please let me know…I’m so curious!

When preparing the Keurig 2.0 for use, I also found another change – the filter was SO much easier to put in place! Yay!

Keurig 2 (6)

I also love the new digital screen! There’s so many new functions and features on the Keurig 2.0 – even the “background wallpaper” of the screen can be programed as well as the light/water color of the tank!

Keurig 2 (10)

Setting the machine up was super easy, too!

Keurig 2 (12)

In no time, my coffee was ready for brewing.

An additional feature that wasn’t included in my old Keurig model is a timing/programmable system – want a cup of coffee ready when you wake up in the morning? No problem!

Keurig 2 (14)

See the Keurig Brewed ring around the K-Cup? I used one from the sample pack…

Keurig 2 (15)

All ready! The Keurig 2.0 can brew 6, 8, or 10 oz. of coffee along with hot water for tea! I was really happy to hear that this Keurig model kept the hot water/tea option because I brew a cup of tea to drink every Saturday before my long run.

Keurig 2 (16)

The 2.0 brewing system is a bit quieter to me as well.

Keurig 2 (17)

Thanks, Keurig, I will! :)

Lets review the changes I’ve noticed with the Keurig 2.0 from my older Keurig model:
  • Brews a pot of coffee up to four/five cups (30 oz)
  • New K-Carafe functionality
  • All digital screen
  • New features including customization of screen/light preferences
  • Timing system for programmable brewing
  • Easier filter insertion
  • Quieter brewing
  • Does not brew unlicensed K-Cups
  • No longer brews coffee grounds
I do love the new Keurig 2.0. The sleekness of the design and new digital screen is so much fun to work with. The major downfall in this machine (in my opinion) is the lack of ability to brew coffee grounds. Apart from that, I love everything else about the Keurig 2.0! (If you never brew your own coffee grounds and don’t really care about this change, then this system will 100% work for you!)
There you have it, my thoughts and opinions on the brand new Keurig 2.0 system. It’s now available in stores, I’ve seen these systems in several locations around town.

If you purchase the new Keurig 2.0 system, I hope you enjoy!

Special thanks to Keurig and Influenster for this opportunity!

    1. That's how I felt about my older model Keurig - it wasn't the newest one out there but I loved it!! :)

  2. That's a huge bummer about not brewing coffee grounds and about having to use the new cups. I hate when brands do that as a ploy to get you to buy the new accessories, cups, etc. I have a stockpile of old k cups so that would make me sad. I like that it can brew more than one cup at a time though!

    1. I couldn't agree more!! Makes me sad, too. The Carafe is one of my favorite features! :)

    2. I love my 2.0 but I wish there was a way of keeping the coffee carafe warmer longer. with only me drinking it in the mornings it gets cold before I get it all drank. and don't like the idea of the new k-cups as they are hard to find still.

    3. I use regular coffee in my 2.o just need to research it is all

    4. James, the ability to brew regular coffee in the 2.0 wasn't available when the machine first came out (which is when this review was written). I now own the "My K-Cup" which wasn't introduced initially.

  3. My grandfather has a Keurig and loves it. My mom was trying to find out Christmas ideas a couple years ago and he said he wanted a Keurig. My grandmother made such a stink that he didn't need it so the whole family chipped in to him his Keurig.

  4. Tom drinks coffee and I drink tea and honestly the size of those Keurig coffee makers is something I do not like. And he is happy with a small coffee pot that is hidden in a corner on my kitchen counter. People seem to love them, but I am just not a fan. I was surprised the last time I was in the lounge at an airport and they had something similar (not sure it was Keurig brand) and I needed to have someone show me how to make tea! LOL

    1. To be honest, this Keurig doesn't take any additional space than my 12 cup coffee maker on the counter. I can see where you're coming from though, if it's a much smaller coffee maker!

  5. I love my Keurig! That is neat that this one can brew a whole pot of coffee!

  6. I don't drink coffee but my sister does. She would like that you can now brew a whole pot!

  7. Great review! I love my Keurig but I've had it for a while and this makes me want to upgrade, especially since it brews a whole pot of coffee!!!

    1. Yay for Keurig fans! I loved my old brewer, too...the only downfall is the coffee grounds which I brewed often.

  8. Excellent review! I have the basic Keurig, which works for me right now (party of one). I like that the 2.0 version has a hot tea option.

  9. I have gone through 4 K550's . I have had problems with the digital clock not keeping accurate time. In all 4 machines (3 of which was sent by Keurig's warranty dept) the time would run about 60 minutes fast. The internal clock changed minutes every 30 seconds instead of every 60 seconds. I was constantly resetting the clock. Then I had problems with the machines accepting the new K-cups. The machine is garbage. It is the worst Keurig I have ever owned.

    1. Oh my gosh that's terrible...I'm so sorry to hear that, Greg.

    2. I am also having the same issue I am on my 4th Keurig 2 of which have come directly from Keurig My father also purchased one with the same problem.I am done testing this out I am surpprised there are not more complaints.

    3. I'm on my 2nd. But figured out the problem. Leaving the pods in the machine and it would dry and clog the needles.

    4. I am on my 3rd 2.0 (2 from warranty dept.). The clock is always running fast. The warranty dept. told me they had never heard of this problem before.

    5. I'm on my 3rd failed machine too. I'm trying to find a fix for it before I send it back or totally getting a refund. it sucks to find you are not having coffee in the morning.

    6. We are waiting for our 2nd replacement due to clock issues exactly the same as Greg. The warranty department also told us they never heard of this problem. I told them that was hard to believe. Then they wanted us to pay to return parts to them from the defective machines - no way! They did end up waiving that stipulation. This is definitely too much hassle.

    7. I am waiting for my 5th 2.0 to be sent to me. The previous 4 all had problems with the clock not keeping correct time and not recognizing the K-cups. I went through almost 2 boxes of K-cups that are all suppose to work as they had the logo on the box and the correct information on the seal of the k-cup. Very frustrating. And the worst part is that Kuerig will not admit they have a problem with the 450 and 550 2.0 machines.

    8. I had an old KCup which worked well. I did have to return the first one because it kept wanting to descale. I then bought the new 2.0 for my husband for Christmas and the clock would get almost 9 hours ahead. We tried unplugging, reprogramming etc. Called Keurig and they sent out a new one, now that one is not keeping time either. With what i'm reading above, i'm not sure I want another one. Disappointed.

    9. In short, 1st unit six minutes fast per day, 2nd unit 5 minutes fast. Keurig customer service said that the issue was very rare. I told him he should stop letting Keurig blow smoke up his.... All clocks in house accurate to each other. My wife does not like it to boot. She says it is too damned big! It also has a pump that seems to labor and make too much noise. It also emits radio interference like a cheap schitte electronics device from China. K-cup lock not an issue (did a workaround). Would I buy Keurig again? I'll leave it at a stark simple, no effin' way!

    10. Yep, our clock always runs fast too. You reset it, and in a few days it's 15 minutes or so ahead already. At this point it's now 42 minutes ahead. Fortunately we don't need it and we ignore it.

    11. I got tired of resetting the time on my Keurig 2.0 and after reading this blog I called Keurig. They put me on hold for a few minutes but when they came back they acknowledged the problem. They don't have a solution but indicated that they are working on a "fix." No time frame promised. For the inconvenience they offered me 2 boxes of k-cups.

    12. August 2015 reading this same problem with times running fast. Guess they never fixed it.

  10. I like this new model but I agree about it being a little bit of an issue that you can't use the old KCups....

  11. I am having the same issue with this coffee maker not keeping the correct time. I am on my 3rd 2.0 and today once again the time is incorrect. It goes up 2 minutes at a time this is a huge problem for me since I like to program my coffee maker to come on at a certain time. I think I may give up and go back to my platinum.

    ReplyDelete
  12. I'm on my 3rd 2.0 400 with the same timing issue. I guess I'll be getting g my 4th one. I really love keurig so this is really disappointing to me. I'm glad to know I'm not the only one with that issue.

    ReplyDelete
  13. I too am having a time issue! Boo!

    ReplyDelete
  14. Timing issue with mine after I returned first one for the same problem.

    ReplyDelete
  15. My third one is on the way. Same problem, time advances as much as 10 minutes a day.and talking with the Keurig rap, they don't even want the old ones back. She said they have so many returned that they just don't need them. They do, however, want part of the K cup holder back. she said that it was to prove that I had one.I personally think that's just so that it can't be used.other than this problem, I really like the fact that you can actually choose a strength of coffee.

    1. You've got me beat, my Keurig 2.0 K55 clock only advances 6 minutes a day. Funny, all other digital devices in my kitchen, and there are a lot of them, hold steady day by day, week by week, month by month. I guess to Keurig, faster is better...

    2. Another comment... I tried to run a cup of hot water by my wife without her knowing that it did not come from her usual hot water boiler to use for her tea. Evidently if you are a tea connoisseur, you know. She said that her tea tasted funny. I told her what I had done. The response? "Don't do it again."

I am not sure how she will take to the K-cup teas she got for Christmas. Most likely the same response.

  16. On my third 2.0 also. The 1.0 was great and we should've never replaced it. They are going to loose customers if another one bites the dust.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Total waste 2.0. Tried first one it lasted a month. Second one lasted two months. This would be a great machine if it lasted as long as the original

    ReplyDelete
  18. Had my 2.0 less than 1 month and Digital display is failing. Cannot read half the time, jumbled up, streaking or just blank. Anyone else?

    ReplyDelete
  19. I called the Keurig support line because of the clock issue and they replaced it. I pulled out the new one and set it up in a temporary location to see if the clock issue was fixed, and it was. I then moved it to it's permanent location (next to my microwave) and the clock started running fast. I moved it away from the microwave and no more clock issue. Now I've put a metal plate (a cooking griddle) between the coffee maker and the microwave (and ran the cord above the microwave, not behind it) and the clock is still working correctly. So for my situation, there seems to be interference coming from the microwave that is affecting the Keurig 2.0.
