Running & A Little Shopping, Too!

On Saturday morning, my friend Heather and I ran 14 miles. Our routes consisted of a 3.5 miles out and back (for 7 miles) and another 3.5 miles out and back (for a total of 14 miles).

Around mile 5, we saw a sign for a garage sale. As usual, we stopped and walked around to see what the owners had for sale.

Here’s a little backstory – I’ve been searching for a reading/accent chair for our bedroom since the spring. I found a few that I liked at furniture stores around town but the price tag wasn’t appealing to me. If I’m going to spend money on something, I’ve gotta love it!  My chair requirements – must be be dark brown (solid) or with a variety khaki green and tan colors.

Back to the garage sale….

We stopped, we walked through, and that’s when I spotted it – a beautiful brown leather chair. Perfect. The chair didn’t have a price tag on it, but the accent pillows were the perfect colors.

At first, I didn’t think the chair was for sale so we continued on our way. I guess the owner saw us and shouted as we walked away… “the chair is for sale, too!”

Oooohh…it is? I turned around, sat down in it, and knew I had to have it...and the accent pillows, too. The price she quoted was one I couldn’t pass up. Only problem…my purse was about 2 miles away.

I explained my predicament to the lady – I asked if she would mind holding the chair for me… “I have two miles to run back to my car, then about another two miles to get back to you once I grab a check…then can I come back and get the chair once my run is completely finished?”

I’m sure she thought I was nuts…..but she agreed!

When we returned with the check, a sold sign was laying across the seat cushion. Mine all mine!

After finishing our run, my friend Heather also drove over to the house to help load the chair in the back of my SUV. (Thank goodness this lady was so agreeable to everything…and thank goodness for great friends!)

One problem – I was worried that the chair wouldn’t fit. The arms stuck out about 2 inches too far (or so I thought). As I was on the phone with my dad trying to figure something out (Jason was working), Heather made the chair fit and the back door closed perfectly! Whoop!

On the drive home, I couldn’t see a thing out of my back window. Needless to say, I drove very carefully! (Like my shirt?) :)

14 Miles & Shopping (5)

It took a LOT of maneuvering, but the chair finally fit inside the house. I almost gave up and left it on the front porch. Hah!

The chair, the pillows, the colors…everything fits perfectly in my bedroom. Now all I need is a side table and a lamp and my little reading corner will be complete!

Madalynn gave her approval on the new chair, too. Actually, she couldn’t care less – I was eating lunch here and she wanted a bite, too! Silly girl…

Back to the run…I’m going to sound wimpy here, but I honestly HURT after this run. I haven’t run a distance greater than 13 miles since the spring and my hip flexors and legs were killing me all day on Saturday and Sunday! I so remember the days where I could run higher mileage and not have a problem at all…guess that’s the price of not training for full marathons and getting older! Ugh. Regardless, I’m ready for you Wine & Dine (and your after party)!

How was your weekend? What’s the best find you’ve ever snagged at a garage sale? This was my best by far!

  1. Hey! This is totally off topic, but last night my husband and I were looking at the Run Disney website. We could not believe the prices of the races! I know the races are well organized and fun, but the cost is outrageous. I guess it shocked me so much, because a Disney trip is so expensive anyway, that it seems like adding on a race just puts it over the top (for us).

    1. I do agree with you in a way. This is the way I look at it - yes the races are quite pricey, but you have to factor in everything you "get" with a Disney race from the characters to the added/extra entertainment. I guess it's all about what's worth it in the end...I love Disney races, they are my favorite to run so I don't mind paying extra for registration fees. I definitely wish their registration fees were a little cheaper, though!

  2. Nice purchase Karen. The throw pillows are really cute. I have not been to a garage sale in years, but plan on hosting one for the new non profit that a group of runners have formed. We need $$ to be able to help young runners/athletes be able to afford to participate in their sport. We hope to purchase shoes, uniforms etc for kids. Definitely looking forward to our group garage sale!
